God, Help Me?
by Steve Pettit

Keeping company with Jesus is not simply about acquiring information. The myth that I can become more like Jesus and, therfore, pleasing to God, by gathering information about Him from others must be shattered. Jesus boldly and bluntly smashed this illusion in front of the most religiously informed people of His day when He said, "You search the Scriptures because in them you think you have life, but you are unwilling to come to Me." (John 5:39-40) The Christian life is not merely facts to be learned, examples to be imitated, laws to be kept - all distant and impersonal. It is getting to know a Person (John 17:3) - up close and intimately. The Christian life is not a way of life that needs to be explained to people so they can, through self-willed effort, make it "work." It Is living by the Life of God who cannot be explained, Who, alone, can make it work. Christianity is not about discovering, through painful study, secret keys that will cause God to help us live the Christian life. Jesus is no more interested in helping us live the Christian life than He is in helping us get saved. HE DOES NOT HELP US GET SAVED, HE SAVES US! HE DOES NOT HELP US LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE, HE LIVES THE CHRISTIAN LIFE AS US!
