The Courage To Be "I"
by Soren Kierkegaard

It is impossible to be involved with God without enduring the weight of the pressure of being "I." Yet thousands live on without having to be "I," or they live on as truncated "I's," truncated to the third person. They fill their lives with all sorts of things, imagine that they are really involved with God, flatter themselves that they have not ventured further out because they are so humble. What confusion! The first condition for getting straightened out is to see that THIS notion about humility is complete rubbish, that one is dragging his feet only because of weakness, thin skin, and cowardice.
